Women of Steel: Female Bodybuilders and the Struggle for Self-Definition

Women of Steel: Female Bodybuilders and the Struggle for Self-Definition

"Many people in the general public believe that female bodybuilding is gross and freaky ... Whether it is not what a female is supposed to look like. "Thus, said Michelle, a national judge fitness. In fact, female sports, especially in sports where strength, muscle, sweat and contained prominently, are generally regarded by the public as being outside the bounds of appropriate femininity. And perhaps not a group of women athletes embodies such outlaw status of female over coach, who their simple mass and strength of our challenge very notions of what it means to be a woman. Why do women choose to look like that? And what does it take to become and remain so muscular?

Maria R. Lowe is an assistant professor of sociology at the university in the south-west of Texas. She has interviewed more than a hundred people in connection with female bodybuilding, from the bodybuilder himself, the coaches, relatives, spouses, judges, and the sponsors. In women of Steel, Lowe introduces us to a world in which the size and strength must be balanced with a nod to grace and femininity. Lowe, who actually worked with some of the bodybuilder she interviewed, get in the heart of what it is to a female bodybuilder. We learn about "paying the price" - do the necessary exercise, and sometimes drugs - with which women to rise to the top of their profession. We follow their successes and failures, and discover the benefits - including increased self-confidence and physical strength - and sometimes unhealthy effects of their training regimen, from dehydration to baldness to uncontrolled acne to high blood pressure. We travel with the women of the competition in the competition and found that the judges' standards appear to vary depending on the alarming temporary notions what the "total package" - that elusive perfect body that catches the judges' eyes and win matches.

Above is the wife of Steel is a sharply observant diary of the lives of female bodybuilding, a must-read for people interested in sport, competition, physical culture, and gender.

The New Rules of Lifting for Women: Lift Like a Man, Look Like a Goddess

The New Rules of Lifting for Women: Lift Like a Man, Look Like a Goddess

Finally, a weight-training book that doesn’t treat women like weaklings!

If you believe what most women's magazines tell you, muscles can be "shaped", "trained" and "sculpted" with nothing but a small dumbbell that weighs less than a can of peas. But muscles are not modeling clay, and the only way to transform them is to strengthen them. The new rules for Lifting of women is the woman who is ready to throw down "Barbie" tickets, and begin a strength and conditioning program that will give her the body of her dreams. The book puts to rest and shop-worn concept that women who train with heavy weights will bulk up. Nonsens! Women simply do not have enough testosterone to pack on muscle as a hearted. Here is the truth: that promise weights not only makes you stronger, but also makes you slimmer. In fact, most women would have to run twice as long to get the same fat-burning benefits as weight lifters. A better workout in less time may sound too good to be true, but the champion trainer Alwyn Cosgrove creates six months' worth of workouts that will build strength, burn fat, and rev up the metabolism. His total body workouts target all the major muscle groups, and each exercise is accompanied by clear black and white photographs that illustrate the proper technique and form.

A nutrition level is another key element in the book. Winning the strength you have to feed muscle, and nutritionist Cassandra Forsythe has designed a regimen to achieve this objective. She strongly recommends small, frequent meals and offer meal plans with fifty recipes, to meet the specific needs of women through breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. The new rules for Lifting of women becomes the standard for smart women who take their fitness goals seriously.
About the Author
LOU SCHULER, a certified strength and conditioning specialist, has been a health and fitness journalist since 1992 and was a fitness editor at Men’s Fitness and fitness director of Men’s Health. Although his previous book, The New Rules of Lifting, was written for men, it has generated much excitement among women looking to start lifting programs.

CASSANDRA E. FORSYTHE, M.S., is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Connecticut, where she is studying exercise science and nutrition.

ALWYN COSGROVE is co-owner with his wife, Rachel, of Results Fitness in Newhall, California. During his more than fifteen-year career as a strength and conditioning coach, he has earned virtually every major certification, and has worked with men and women on the national and Olympic levels. He has trained professionals and world champions in boxing, martial arts, soccer, ice-skating, football, fencing, rugby, bodybuilding, dance, and triathlon and fitness competition.

What swimmer45 said about "The New Rules of Lifting for Women: Lift Like a Man, Look Like a Goddess"?

"Lift like a man, look like a Goddess" says the book. But is it true? swimmer45 believe it is, and this book is right on the money. "The New Rules of Lifting for Women: Lift Like a Man, Look Like a Goddess" is cleanly divided into three parts.

The first part discusses the similarities between men's and women's bodies as it pertains to weight lifting- and why they should train the same. I agree with "The New Rules of Lifting for Women: Lift Like a Man, Look Like a Goddess" on this point entirely. While female's muscles won't get as big as a man's from lifting weights, the stimulus to make a woman's muscle bigger and stronger is identical to that of a man's- overload the muscle with progressively heavier weights.

Part two, "You aren't what you don't eat", is the eating/diet section of this book. A lot of wisdom is also packed in here as the book gives us a lot of basic nutrition info, such as calorie needs, protein intake, etc. We are also introduced to the four "Ironclad Rules" which include: we must eat breakfast, we must eat a total of 5 meals and snacks a day, we must have a post-bodybuilding recovery shake on the days you lift, and we must have more calories on workout days than the other days. Meal plans are nicely laid out for us in this section as well.

Lastly comes part three, "Resistance is vital." Of course this is the section that discusses the bodybuilding routines and the exercises. Without going into details, you workout 2-3 times a week, and the bodybuildings are divided in 7 stages (each with a certain goal) which roughly give you 6 months worth of workouts- which I might add, are all highly detailed in "The New Rules of Lifting for Women: Lift Like a Man, Look Like a Goddess". Pictures of warm-up exercises and the resistance exercises are included and very easy to follow. Weight lifting exercises are nothing crazy, with a lot of them being sensible, basic exercises such as squats, deadlifts, and various presses.

As a trainer, swimmer45 found this to be a very sensible weight lifting book for women. It does invovlve some work, but then again that is the only way to make a muscle stronger, whether you are a man or a woman- which is the whole point of "The New Rules of Lifting for Women: Lift Like a Man, Look Like a Goddess". Based on a lot of sound science, I give it two thumbs up for a very helpful, effective, and "doable" book. Swimmer45 also recommend Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff for readers who have a shoulder problem that interferes with their training.

Iron Maidens: The Celebration of the Most Awesome Female Muscle in the World

Iron Maidens: The Celebration of the Most Awesome Female Muscle in the World

"Iron Maidens: The Celebration of the Most Awesome Female Muscle in the World" is a fun book about the misfortunes of the author - and incredible naivety - led this amazing female's bodybuilding spectacular. I was one of the "schmoes" participation in the event, and I can tell you this female body spoke volumes! You do not have any poetry, dance, speechifying, or any of the nonsense of the author was apparently responsible for. Yes, we in the audience hooted at the intermediate amateur games. But we applauded mightily when we saw these incredibly muscular female, they had the courage and devotion to remake their bodies, please call themselves and others do not. The bulk of this book is the author of the description of female's bodybuilding scene. Unfortunately, the author claims that almost all female bodybuilders take steroids or used in any way to supplement, and they also claimed that most were victims of abuse as children. In addition, the sport was paralysed by inconsistent assessment standards and a wave of reactions against the ultra-muscular view of women. The author also has some honors at the end of the book suggests, why Laurie Fierstein's groundbreaking ceremony was so important. Because it proved that there is an audience for female bodybuilders only with itself and not in competition with the arbitrary approval of some timid male judges. This book is quick read and reveals a look at this unique world. I am a star deduction but one of the last chapter, in which the author indulges their writer's muse in Grand Central Station and bores the audience again, just as it did in the celebration Fierstein.

BodyMinder Workout and Exercise Journal

BodyMinder Workout and Exercise Journal

BodyMinder Workout and Exercise Journal is published by MemoryMinder Journals, Inc. on January 1, 2007.
Muscle Mag International, June 2003
The BodyMinder (pictured) has spacious daily pages for tracking reps, sets, etc.

Short Hairstyles, September 2003
The BodyMinder helps by encouraging you to record your exercise...meet your fitness goals once and for all!

When research into the Amazon search feature shows an old edition. After the purchase, we have seen some improvements have been made.

In particular, a diet section now includes boxes for breakfast snack-lunch-dinner snack snack. This corresponds to the person following a regime that requires them to eat 5-6 small meals a day instead of the old standard of 3 meals. To make room for it, the Other exercise "has been somewhat diminished. Instead of having checkboxes great for various activities such as gardening and yoga (which was a waste of space to people who did not use them), there are now 5 blank lines where you can write in your own activities, whatever they may be May.

The cardio section has also been revised. The cross-country skier and jump rope have been removed, but there are three blank lines where we could add if they want.

Anyway, I would say that it was already an excellent product, and it is good to know that improves with time. Here are some things that I like compared to other magazines I looked at training.
-- I like that it is both a workout and food journal and gives plenty of space for both. It is important to pay attention both to obtain and keep in shape.
-- I like it a lot of lines for the weight training exercises. Others have not been fairly close to my needs.
-- Other magazines We've looked at have much smaller spaces for writing in.
-- Some newspapers have pictures on the cover of fitness models. I do not want to wear something in the gym that looks like the cover of a lady fitness magazine or a male muscle magazine. I prefer the conservative faux leather look of the magazine.
-- The spiral-bound to ask flat for easy use.
-- I found the short section of food preservation account within reach. Better still, they left the space where I could add my own food.
-- The introduction is helpful, but brief. It tells you how to use the newspaper. He did not say how you work.
-- He has a good section on planning weekly at the beginning and the goals of advancement, at the end.
-- The schedule at the back is handy for reference.

I will certainly buy this one again when I filled all day.

Fit and Female: The Perfect Fitness and Nutrition Game Plan for Your Unique Body Type

Fit and Female: The Perfect Fitness and Nutrition Game Plan for Your Unique Body Type

If you are looking for a fitness book that will tell you what to eat and how to exercise in order to get a super-muscular body, or a super-thin model-type body, then look elsewhere. This is not a book about diet and exercise, but about learning to accept and take care of your body, no matter the shape and size. That said, there are exercises designed for each body type, as well as nutrition and eating advice.

Now we have all heard the message that we should love our body, no matter what, and certainly there are lots of fitness books out there with the same message. So what makes Geralyn's book different from all the rest? It's because she's lived through the same struggles as the average woman. When a genetically-blessed woman tells you that you should accept your body, you probably think "Yeah, it's easy for her to say because she has the perfect body." And consequently, we never really listen to the message and reflect on what it means. However, coming from Geralyn, the message hits home because she has suffered the same weight issues as many of us. I was able to relate to Geralyn's message, because her struggles really mimicked my own. I've struggled to accept myself almost my entire life, and despite being an avid runner and very healthy, I still have a hard time with self-acceptance. Knowing that Geralyn was able to overcome her issues and find self-love and self-acceptance is a real inspiration. I think if someone had told me these things many years ago, it would have saved me a lot of suffering.

You may think that the motivational part of the fitness book is too long, but I think Geralyn is on to something. Unless you can first accept your body the way it is now, no matter how much you exercise and diet, it is unlikely that you will be happy with your body no matter how fit and/or thin you may become.

Turning to the exercise portion of the fitness book, you first have to determine your unique body type (e.g. ectomorph, mesomorph, or endomorph, and apple or pear). Of course, hardly anyone fits neatly into one category, but chances are you are predominantly one type. Once you know what "type" you are, Geralyn recommends certain cardio and strength training exercises, which are supposed to be optimal for your type. Recognizing that fitness has to fit a woman's schedule, she also tells you how many repetitions and sets you need to do, based on the amount of time you have (bare minimum, ideal, and gung-ho). Now, I've been running for over 5 years and have consistently strength trained, so when I saw the strength training exercises Geralyn recommended, I didn't think I'd derive much benefit. Boy, was I wrong! I did the gung-ho workout (most repetitions and sets) and my muscles hurt for TWO straight days!

In terms of eating, Geralyn teaches you to have a healthy relation with food. She cautions against mindless eating, urges proper nutrition, and details eating tips for each body type. Again, what makes her message powerful (because who hasn't already heard about the dangers of mindless eating?) is that she has gone through this herself.

To conclude, I highly recommend this fitness book. Whether you are struggling with your body image, are just beginning to make the decision to love your body, or already wholly accept yourself (and kudos to you if you do!), you should read this fitness book. It is truly enjoyable, powerful, and liberating. Keep in mind that changing your self-perception does not happen overnight, especially if you've had a negative image about yourself for many years (or your whole life, in my case). But with this fitness book and the right attitude, you can begin the journey to a happier, and healthier you.

Accu-Measure Fitness 3000 Personal Body Fat Tester

This little plastic product is so quick and easy to measure your body fat percentage that you almost feel like it can't be that accurate.

But just for kicks you had my body fat measured with one of those fancy electronic machines several times before using the Accu-Measure calipers.

The average of three readings for the electronic device was 26% body fat while the Accu-Measure showed 25.5%. Not bad considering this product is a whole heck of a lot CHEAPER than the electronic body fat machines. Accu-Measure calipers will help you track your progress. VERY affordable and they REALLY work!

Peter H. Tours "peterht"
(ft lauderdale, fl) give 5 stars for this nutrition drink. Peter H. Tours is 5 years out from his operation (RNY) and solid food has little appeal after dealing with eating too much or too fast, etc. His surgeon calls it "negative behavioral reinforcement" - Peter H. Tours call it "pouch purge".

Peter H. Tours discovered Zoic while speaking to another patient during a post op visit. This patient raved about it. Peter H. Tours went out immediately and bought it, loved it and it has been his primary form of nutrition ever since. He have consulted his surgeon, 2 nutritionists and his family doctor and no one could shoot holes in the product - is a really great nutrition in a can!

ZOIC Nutrition Drink was always a challenge trying to find enough Zoic in local stores - they do no stock very much and it's only available in the biggest supermarkets. This new Amazon service is the best thing since - well, since Peter H. Tours gave up sliced bread!

Advanced Sports Nutrition

Advanced Sports Nutrition

Lyle "L3" (Wisconsin, USA) give "Advanced Sports Nutrition" 5 stars. Lyle said that this exceptional book is not a "one stop reference"; thats an idea that people often look for in a fitness book, that probably doesn't really exist. Quality fitness books should be added to your library, taken for what they are and what they offer, and compared to other similar books to create a bigger picture or understanding as it applies to you...there is no single perfect "way" when it comes to nutrition, much like training for your chosen sport. This fitness book is no exception, it is well researched and exceptionally useful, written by an author that applies what he knows to Olympic athletes. As a strength athlete most interested in powerlifting and strongman types of lifting and competition, the chapters referring to this type of training directly are limited and mostly bunched up with wrestlers, etc. under "power athletes", so it isn't exactly what I was looking for, but it still fits the bill in alot of ways as the info is there just not set out by itself under that title. Advanced Sports Nutrition covers a broad range of sports and has tons of useful information on everything nutrition that can be useful to just about anyone. It covers alot of unique as well as general topics. Join it up with a few more fitness books like Nutrition Almanac and you will be on your way to having whatever you need at your fingertips. This book is worth your time and money, you might not realize the extent if its usefulness until you open it up and start putting things together.

Advanced Sports Nutrition containts 5 parts:

Part I Nutritional Sources for Athletes
-energy nutrients, vitamins/minerals, fluids/electrolytes, and ergogenic aids

Part II Nutritional Aspects of Optimal Performance
-timing, absorption, oxygen, and inhibitors

Part III Factors Affecting Nutritional Needs
-travel, altitude, gender/age, and body comp/weight

Part IV Nutritional Strategies for Specific Energy Systems
-Metabolism for endurance/power (anaerobic/aerobic), and needs for both

Part V Nutritional Plans for Specific Sports

However, you can maximize your current abilities and set the stage for more physical gains. I have never felt better both during and post exercise. No fad diets will be found here. What you will find is a common sense approach to a healthy lifestyle that is centered around healthy eating and exercise. Ms. Applegate is both encouraging of a healthy diet and realistic enough to know people need to have "comfort" foods every once in awhile.
