What to Wear to a Wedding Ceremony.


You’ve gotten the invitation for your friends’ wedding happily circled the date on your calendar and started shopping for their gift when all of a sudden it hits you what are you supposed to wear ? The etiquette for proper wedding guest attire can vary greatly depending on the style of the wedding. You’ll have to become a little bit of a detective but fear not. There are clues everywhere.

Start off with the invitation. Is it in flowing engraved black script on a heavy cream paper with formal language? Odds are the wedding will be similarly formal. Does it cheekily ask you to come see them get hitched? Wedding guests should look for a nice casual outfit. And of course, it may tell you directly on the invitation – black tie, casual attire etc.

Think about where the wedding is set – if it’s outdoors avoid anything that will get caught in the wind – you won’t want a battle of wills between the wind and your modesty! Also, avoid high heeled shoes that will sink in the sand or in the grass. If it’s in a hot location avoid the suit and go for a breezy dress to help you keep your cool. Indoors at the country club or fancy restaurant? Make your outfit slightly more tailored and dressy.
Daytime Wedding
for her

* a fun floral dress
* a skirt and a sweater set with slingback shoes. (H&M has some surprisingly affordable and stylish skirts right now that will work for a daytime wedding)
* a light colored suit – try to stay away from black, navy or anything that looks like you’re going to the office.
* a beautiful hat that coordinates with your outfit.

for him

* In the summertime, a light-colored suit, especially linen or seersucker.
* Winter weddings call for warmer clothing, including wool suits, a navy blazer with charcoal pants, and perhaps a sweater and tie underneath a blazer.
* A dress shirt, tie and dress pants is acceptable, but dress it up with a blazer if you can.
* If the invitation says formal, wear a dark suit. Tuxedoes are not appropriate before 6 pm.

Evening Wedding
for her

* dress as you would if you were going out to the theater or to dinner.
* a cocktail dress – nothing too sexy but something fun to dance in. Black is fine.
* a dressy suit or a cocktail suit
* wear darker colors and look for something sophisticated
* avoid beads or sequins unless the invitation specifically says black tie

for him

* a dark suit is always appropriate
* If the invitation says casual or semi-formal, you can wear a blazer and slacks with a nice tie.

Black-tie optional
for her

* A cocktail dress, perhaps to the floor

* If you have a tuxedo, or just like wearing one, by all means do so
* Otherwise, wear a dark suit. Dress as formally as you can.

Black tie
for her

* a formal dress, usually to the floor
* bring out those beaded purses, fancy wraps and formal jewelry that’s been waiting for an occasion such as this
* black tie weddings almost always involve dancing, so don’t wear anything too constricting

for him

* a tuxedo is the only appropriate thing to wear. If it says creative black tie, he should still wear a tuxedo, perhaps with a black shirt or collarless white shirt.

DON’T WEAR:

* White. (This rule has relaxed some, and you can get away with wearing a printed dress with a white background and some cream colored clothing. Just be careful not to upstage the bride.)
* Black to a daytime wedding
* Jeans
* Anything too sexy or revealing
* Anything torn, with holes, stained, too big or too small for you!
* Anything sleeveless or strapless to a religious wedding. Bring a wrap to cover your shoulders.

Young labels like the Row, Jason Wu, Nellie Partow, Waris Ahluwalia and Prabal Gurung are trumpeting their New York roots on apparel and labels in an effort to create a sartorial version of the locavore movement. The idea: to link locally-made clothes with artisanal values to promote stitched-in-New York sales.

As New York's Garment District struggles to survive, a consortium of designers and manufacturers have launched a campaign, Made in Midtown, in hopes that clothing shoppers will become more conscious of the impact of their purchases.
A prominent tag on a Jason Wu dress reads, "This garment has been completely hand assembled in New York, using fabrics of superior craftmanship." Mr. Wu says that keeping his operations in New York, where his design studio is located, is vital to his business. Close proximity to his pattern makers, cutters and suppliers allows him to more easily experiment with designs as well as keep tabs on the work, says the designer, who rose to national fame when Michelle Obama wore a dress designed by him to the presidential inauguration.

With more than 200 posts over the course of 2008, we had much to sort through and have chosen these posts based on the highest number of page views. Fashion 2.0 | Top 10 Online Fashion Magazines - This article, ranking online fashion magazines from incumbent media players like Style.com andVogue to emerging upstarts like Fashion156.com and Hintmag, caught the attention of The New York Times, resulting in almost 10,000 page views and flurry of comments from BoF readers.

2. Luxury Outlook 2008 | How much padding does that luxury cushion have? – Back in January, while some were still arguing that the luxury industry would be immune to any economic slowdown, we were amongst the first to report that the luxury industry would not be spared. Not in the slightest.

3. Everybody’s talking about | Men’s Underwear - Amongst others, David Beckham’s campaign for a brand new line of underwear by Emporio Armani was the latest sign of the growing popularity of designer underwear amongst a new generation of brand-conscious men.

4. Japanese Women | From Luxury to Yuru-Nachu – From Tokyo, BoF Contributing Editor W. David Marx dispatched an interesting article highlighting a trend for more relaxed, natural fashion for women in one of the world’s most fashion forward style capitals.

5. Tokyo | The decline of big brand luxuryOn a trip to Tokyo in June, even before the subsequent market meltdown exacerbated the deterioration of the luxury business in Japan, I learned of an emerging trend drawing Japanese consumers away from big Western brands and towards innovative brands providing a more special, personalised experience.

6. Rad Hourani | Self-styledWe took the opportunity to get to know Rad Hourani’s budding talent a bit better, revealing a confident designer whose vision had been honed during his young career as a stylist in Montreal, with no formal fashion training whatsoever.

CEO Talk | Natalie Massenet, Founder and Chairman of Net-a-Porter- In our first CEO Talk, Natalie Massenet, frequently described as one of the most influential women in the fashion business, spoke to us about NET-A-PORTER and her plans for the burgeoning online luxury retailer during the downturn.

8. Benjamin Bixby | It’s all about merchandising – During London Fashion Week in September, I spoke to Andre Benjamin (aka Andre 3000 of Outkast) at a Harrods event about setting up his new menswear collection, Benjamin Bixby. Lesson number one? It’s all about merchandising.

9. Everybody’s talking about | Fashion phonesWe shared our views and analysis on an emerging luxury category which has been getting a lot more interest from fashion brands: the fashion phone. Not all players have been approaching the category with a long-term, strategic view.
