Making the Cut: The 30-Day Diet and Fitness Plan for the Strongest, Sexiest You is written by Jillian Michaels. She is a trainer on NBC's The Biggest Loser.

Jillian pushes to get us in "the best and sexiest body shape of our life." Assuming we are already in fairly decent shape, if we have 20 or less pounds to shed and are willing to make the commitment, Jillian Michaels promises to have readers "feeling comfortable running in a bikini." Determining body fat percentage and taking a "fit test" is par for the course in this sort of book. What separates Jillian Michaels' program is that she bases the diet on whether a person is a "slow oxidizer, balanced oxidizer, or fast oxidizer." The idea is that slow oxidizers require more carbohidrats, while fast oxidizers need higher percentages of protein. Michaels provides three different sets of menus and recipes (she claims that there is sound science behind this, but do not expect to see helpful footnotes quoting clinical studies). The majority of this fitness plan book is list-like and not invigorating to read. A glut of trainer-driven fitness books seem to be hitting stands lately; this one only stands out if you accept her notion of oxidizing.

Jillian goes on to explain that the recipes make up to 10 - 12 servings for the following reasons: Most women do not want to make separate meals for their families. Also, the fitness book allots each reader with and individualized calorie allowance. As some of the recipes are very low calorie, some people doing the plan will require up to 5 servings of each recipe. Last, if we always on the run and finding it difficult to cook every night this fitness book will solve our problem. This way we will have healthy food prepared when you are pressed for time. All that said, she specifically mentions in the fitness book that if we want to make less food we can simply cut the ingredients in half and the meal will still come out perfectly making half the servings.

With regard to the workouts: There are over 100 separate exercises in the fitness book and less then 10 of them require gym equipment. The workouts seem predominantly designed to utilize body weight exercises (no gym required).

The workouts do seem tough, that is for sure. However, we can easily modify the exercises to accomodate our fitness level. Jillian offers over 8 variations of plank exercise, 11 different variations of lunges, 8 variations of push ups, and 8 variations of squats just to name a few. For those that do not have a treadmill accessible she offers up over 10 different types of cardio workout intervals that require no equipment like mountain climbers, butt kicks, squat jacks etc.

What I really like about it is it gives a very effective workout & you get faster results because of its use of muscle confusion which gives more efficient work outs because the muscle groups are constantly changed. It also works out all the major muscle groups & gives cardio, yoga, martial arts & stretching in addition to simple strength training. It also gives a book on dieting. Each specific part-the strength training, dieting, cardio, nutrition, they are all in tune modern scientific knowledge. Even the martial arts DVD has you doing moves that are real martial arts (& I've taken martial arts lessons for years). I'm no yoga expert, but people I know who have done it for years were impressed with its yoga DVD.
I have found this DVD more effective than working out in a high end gym for about 1 hr a day. You don't need much equipment, about $150 worth of equipment tops (some dumbells, a pull up bar, you can get more but this is all you really need).
The only thing I didn't like about this series is you have to spend over an hour a day on several of the workouts. This is very time consuming though you will see results fast. I suggest that some of the portions of the workout be performed at double speed on the DVD player such as warm up & stretching to save time. I've been able to cut the workout down by about 10-15 minutes (to about 45-55 minutes a day) but in my opinion I get the same benefits because I do think the stretching & warm up are on the long side. Aside from that I think this DVD series is the best there is.

I purchased this after having it recommended to me by my boot camp instructor and a friend who is a nutritionist. I will say I was a little hesitant, as I am about anything that has an infomercial. But after doing the program, I will have to say it is as legit as it gets. It kicked my butt...even the Yoga X is rough to get through. This program is NOT for someone who is out of shape...you should be in pretty decent shape to start it unless you want to spend a lot of your time just resting. If you are just starting out, go for the Power 90 instead. At any rate, my fat percentage went to half of what it was, I went from pushing an almost 38 waist to a 32 and from 230 lbs to 205. I am almost 6-4 and a pretty big guy...this program just toned and cut me up like nothing else. The nutrition program is spot on too...no gimmicks, just good healthy eating. I had tried Tae Bo and several other programs, but nothing compared to P90X. FYI, I am not a coach for P90X and do not sell any of their goods...just wanted to give a good honest review about it. Bottom line, if you follow the program, you will get in the best shape of your life.

Thought I should edit this...as of Sept 08, I now AM a coach for Beachbody...product has helped me so much, I decided to join in and try to help others with it. Just as an update, I am on my 2nd 90 days and I have gone from 24% body fat down to 16%. My goal is 12% and I fully expect to attain it this year!

Presidebt Kang said that this book is worth the purchase for the section on the Iron Masters alone. When you add in the different approaches to lifting for strength and power, the psycology of working out, the cardio and diet sections, and all the little essays that give us a look into the "Purposeful Primitive", you have a book that is one of the best books for approaching getting the best out of your body. The book almost reads like an Anthony Robbins book on NLP - here are the masters, here is how they worked out, here was their psycology, here is how you can apply it to yourself.

Little Miss Cutey said that "Jillian Michaels - 30 Day Shred" is a really good workout. It's geared a little more to advanced exercisers, but the choreography is fairly basic and you will definately feel this the next day.
There are three workouts that combine toning and aerobics together which are about a half an hour each. This way, you're burning fat and toning muscles at the same time. It's a little challenging, but fun and effective. The first workout is the easiest of the three and from there it gets more challenging. The most challenging workout is tough like she shows on The Biggest Loser (ie travelling pushups and tough jumps etc). It's a good idea if you're intermediate to begin either at the start or middle and stick to that for a while and then move on. Each workout uses toning, kickboxing and ab work.
Little Miss Cutey found this really good to do. It is absolutely a good idea to not go too quickly with it and begin at the lower of the three levels even if you do it only a couple of times - you can always advance as soon as you're ready for your next workout. She may not be the best cuer, but she is certainly encouraging and motivating. This is fun and Little Miss Cutey highly recommend it. After I read some customer review, I know that Catherine Burch is not very coordinated and really hated other aerobic workouts she had tried. This one is fairly easy to follow, Kathy is very encouraging AND there is a plus size woman in the workout who dropped out at different levels - so Catherine Burch didn't feel so bad when she couldn't do the whole thing at first. Catherine Burch like the way it's broken up because you can do 20 or 30 min on different days and still get a great workout. Catherine Burch was doing this one before she got pregnant again and this is her video of choice for getting back in shape.
